How long does a dragon's egg take to hatch? Find out as this hilariously macabre series continues. (Age 8 and up)
In this deadly funny fourth Tale from the Five Kingdoms, it's Gracie Gillypot's birthday, and Prince Marcus plans to show her a flight of dragons as a special gift. But when greedy, chocolate-hungry twins awaken the banished Old Malignant One, evil magic and Total Oblivion threaten the Five Kingdoms. Gracie must find a powerful, long-forgotten dragon's egg before the Old Malignant One does in order to save the day. With the help of a wayward troll, two chatty bats, and the ancient crones, can Gracie foil his rotten plans? And can she overcome a spoiled princess, a malicious crow, and loads of chocolate cake to do so?

Grades 3-6 As has always been the case with French's pleasingly diverting Five Kingdoms series, Trueheart Gracie Gillypot and her royal (and loyal) sidekick guy are aided (this time in a plot involving baby dragons) against the bad guys and gremlins by a family of talking bats. In this romping, fractured fairy tale, illustrations by Collins appear often enough to remiind readers of characters they might have forgotten. Those new to the series will want to start at the beginning, but they are lucky to have four great volumes awaiting them.(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2011, American Library Association.)

In their fourth adventure, Gracie Gillypot and friends face ancient Granpappy Canker, who plans to reverse his banishment through trickery and hypnotic cooking. As usual, humor and hilarity abound. French's light prose is buoyed by Collins's black-and-white sketches, which capture the absurd characters at just the right moments.
